Max your Laptop's battery’s life.
There are ton of sites that have advice on this so here is what I have read that makes sense.

Temperature: Heat is a big enemy of your battery, so keep it cool and having it in the laptop all day while the laptop is been used as a desktop unit is not a good idea. So, if the most of the time the laptops is used as a desktop, take the battery out.

Use the battery: The longer you leave the battery with a full charge without using it the shorter the life. Use it every 2 or 3 weeks.

Power Options: set your power options to the minimal you can. Dim the screen, turn off HD, or set to max battery.

Avoid power eating accessories: CD/DVD drives, USB HD, USD whatever, the more you add via USD the more power you drain from the batteries.

Defrag your Drive: the less time the HD need to get to your data, the less power it uses. A frequently defragged drive will drain less power.
